North Fork Valley
The North Fork Valley cradles the northern tributary of the Gunnison River as it winds its way from high in the roadless forests of the Thompson Divide into this charming valley below. The snow-capped West Elk Mountains frame the valley to the east, while the Grand Mesa’s distinctive flat-top defines the northern horizon.

Wilderness
The North Fork Valley is nestled below the dramatic backdrop of the West Elk and Raggeds Wilderness Areas. At the lower end of the Valley the North Fork flows into the Gunnison River as it makes its way out of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area. The Gunnison Outdoor Resources Protection (GORP) Act proposes to expand the West Elk Wilderness to encompass wilderness-quality lands around Mount Lamborn and Landsend Peak, the prominent mountains framing Paonia.
Wildlife
The region provides crucial habitat for elk, mule deer, black bear, mountain lion and numerous bird species, including bald eagles and Peregrine falcons. The valley’s riparian corridors offer vital migration routes for wildlife, while the surrounding highlands provide essential summer range and winter refuge. Large swaths of the North Fork Valley are categorized as High Priority Habitat by Colorado Parks and Wildlife due to their unique habitat values for elk, mule deer and Cutthroat trout.
Water
The North Fork of the Gunnison River and its tributaries form the lifeblood of the valley, sustaining wildlife, agriculture and communities downstream. These pristine waterways support and contribute to the Colorado River system, providing clean drinking water for millions of downstream residents.
